Poll shows general public would prefer Burton as Labour leader

The Labour leadership battle is heating up with the first debate between the candidates on Monday night.

According to the Millward Brown poll for today's Sunday Independent, when asked which of the leadership candidates would be more likely to attract their vote, 35% say Joan Burton and 16% say Alex White.

But between them, the Labour leadership contenders appeal to only half the electorate.

And 52% of voters felt that Labour should withdraw from Government if current policies of austerity don't change.

Over 1,000 voters were questioned in the poll on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week.

All members of the Labour party, except very recent new members, will be eligible to vote in the leadership election. It is estimated the number of eligible voters is around 5,000.
