Politicians from all parties are getting into top gear for the election campaign, with the Taoiseach expected to announce a date for the vote sometime next week.

All the main political parties have already set out their stalls for the ballot, while canvassers have been knocking on doors across the country even though the campaign has yet to formally get underway.

Politicians, meanwhile, are holding their breaths in anticipation of two new opinion polls due to be published in tomorrow's Sunday newspapers.

They are expected to show that the election is still too close to call, with a number of potential coalitions capable of making up the next Government.
