Polish Society accepts judge's apology for comments02/08/2012 - 07:11:38
The Irish Polish Society has said comments made by a District Court Judge about the Polish community were "inappropriate and irresponsible".
It comes after Judge Mary Devins compared the social welfare system to a charity for Polish people, at Castlebar District Court last Friday.
In a statement last night, she apologised for the remarks, saying they were intended to be specific to one incident and were never intended to offend the Polish community.
Chairperson of the Irish Polish Society Anna Szewc has accepted her apology, but said people in her position need to be more careful.
She said that comments like these do nothing to help people from other countries integrate with the Irish.
Ms Szewc said: "Should there be something done about it? I don’t think so.
"If it happened again maybe there should be some consequences from that, but you know sometimes people get emotions, you can always explain that with something else.
"But that's good that she apologised for that."
