Polish man convicted of assaulting Galway woman

11/07/2008 - 19:38:31
A Polish national has been convicted of sexually assaulting a Galway woman last year.

Tomasz Wojtaniec (aged 46) with an address at The Mayfly Inn, Oughterard, County Galway was remanded in custody by Mr Justice John Edwards for sentence later at the Central Criminal Court.

The jury deliberated for some 11 hours before finding Wojtaniec guilty of sexually assaulting the woman as she walked home from a pub in a Galway town on May 9, 2007 but not guilty of assault causing her harm on the same occasion.

Mr Justice Edwards had earlier directed the jury to find him not guilty of robbing the woman of €120 on the same night. He had denied the charges at his nine-day trial and gave evidence in his defence.

Mr Justice Edwards thanked the five women and six men of the jury for their "exceptional and conscientious attention" to the case. The jury spent two nights in a hotel.
