Police granted more time to interview murder suspect

15/05/2005 - 19:16:57
A man arrested in connection with the murder of teenager Mary-Ann Leneghan, whose family is from Co Mayo, remains in custody tonight after a British magistrate granted detectives an extra day to quiz him, police said.

Three other men have been charged with 16-year-old Mary-Ann’s murder and the attempted murder of her 18-year-old friend in Reading, last weekend.

Two of the men, Adrian Anthony Thomas, aged 19, of south east London, and Indrit Krasniqi, aged 18, of west London, will appear at Reading Magistrates Court tomorrow. They have also been charged with kidnap.

This comes after the girls were abducted by a gang of up to six men on the night of May 6 from the carpark at the disused Wallingford Arms pub.

They were taken to a guesthouse in Reading where they were sexually abused before being dumped at nearby Prospect Park early the next day.

Mary-Ann died from a stab wound to the neck. Her friend survived being shot in the head.

Yesterday Jamaile Morally, 21, from Balham, South west London, was remanded in custody at HMP Bullingdon to appear at Reading Crown Court this Thursday.

Morally was charged with Mary-Ann’s murder, the attempted murder of her friend, kidnap and rape.

Detectives have been permitted by a magistrate tonight to hold the man who has not yet been charged until tomorrow night.

The man's custody time limit was extended by 24 hours, a Thames Valley Police spokeswoman said.

She added: “Police are not yet up to the 96-hour detention time limit and can apply to extend his detention time again if they feel it is necessary.”

Two women and a man, also arrested in connection with the killing, were released on police bail on Saturday night.

Detective Superintendent Mark Warwick, leading the inquiry, said at a news conference at Reading Police station: “There are people in the community that have information that could be valuable to us and we would urge them to come forward.”
