Plastic surgery for Donegal man slashed in row over cigarette

A Donegal man is undergoing plastic surgery in Dublin after he was slashed in the face by another man after refusing to give him a cigarette.
The attack happened in broad daylight on Letterkenny's main street yesterday evening.
The injured man is in his early 30s. He had just returned to Donegal for a break from America, where he now lives.
He was stabbed in the face, head and chest.
Letterkenny Mayor Gerry McMonagle, told Highland Radio he was calling on Justice Minister Alan Shatter to introduce stiffer sentences for those convicted of knife crime.
"We need stronger deterrents against people who are carrying knives and stronger sentences for those who are convicted of knife crime," he said.
He also called for "more gardaí on the streets".
