Laws on the plain packaging of cigarettes have been passed by the Oireachtas.

The bill will now be sent to the President Michael D Higgins to be signed into law.

Children's minister Dr James Reilly has said the new laws will strip tobacco companies of their last chance to advertise their products.

He also believes the new packets - featuring graphic images of damage - will also encourage current smokers to quit.
