The former Environment Minister has formally submitted his resignation from the Oireachtas, to take up his role as EU Commissioner.

The former Environment Minister has formally submitted his resignation from the Oireachtas, to take up his role as EU Commissioner.

Phil Hogan thanked Taoiseach Enda Kenny for selecting him as the Irish nominee for membership of the European Commission.

The Fine Gael TD for Carlow Kilkenny was first elected in 1987. He thanked his constituents for their support over the past 27 years.

Phil Hogan's new job will take effect from Saturday, November 1.
