Pharmacists are urging you to get vaccinated against the flu this Autumn.

The annual jab protects against the most prevalent strain of the virus.

Pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses and healthcare workers all have a heightened risk of complications from the flu.

Those in the at-risk groups and who hold a medical card can get the vaccine for free at your local pharmacy.

Caitriona O’ Riordan, Pharmacist and member of the Executive Committee of the Irish Pharmacy Union, said: “We have seen a significant increase in the numbers availing of the flu vaccine in pharmacies over the last five years, from 9,000 in 2011/2012 up to 62,000 in 2015/2016.

"It is important to remember that flu is an extremely contagious respiratory illness and can lead to serious illness, even death, particularly for elderly patients and those suffering from chronic illnesses or a weakened immune system.

"The flu vaccination, which is available in your local pharmacy, is the best way to reduce your chances of getting seasonal flu and spreading it to others."
