People are being warned against buying animals and puppies illegally this Christmas.

It follows the recent discovery of a puppy farm in north Cork - the ISPCA said the young dogs were destined for the Christmas market.

A substantial number of dogs were found - mostly Terriers and Labradors - being bred in what is described as "squalor and horrendous" conditions.

Four litters of puppies were born on the property in recent weeks - but only three puppies survived.

The dogs were rescued and are now being rehabilitated.
