Pensioner arrested 'on suspicion of assisting offender' after Kerry hit-and-run

A pensioner has been arrested over the hit-and-run death of a cyclist in Kerry three years ago.

Paud O’Leary, 42, died after being knocked off his bicycle at Scrahanfadda, Gneeveguilla, on July 1 2012.

The father-of-four was on an early morning training session for the Ring of Kerry cycle.

Earlier this year, Shane Fitzgerald, 23, of Upper Knockeen, Knockduff, Meelin, Co Cork, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for dangerous driving, causing Mr O’Leary’s death.

Investigating gardai said they have now arrested a second man.

The 70-year-old was detained this morning at an address in north Cork.

A Garda spokesman said he was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

“The man is currently detained at Bandon Garda Station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984,” he added.

“Investigations are continuing.”
