A potential loophole in the penalty points system may be bigger than first indicated.
It has been confirmed that emergency legislation may be needed next week to close the loophole which has emerged in recent days and which could see thousands of penalty points cancelled.
It is believed the potential loophole may be contained in traffic legislation which was passed by the Dáil in January.
The loophole is understood to relate to the increased points for offences such as using a phone while driving.
The Attorney General is to provide legal advice on the problem to the Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe, this morning.
The Minister is refusing to reveal what specific offences are covered by the loophole.
"If there is a potential issue that needs to be dealt with, given that it relates directly to road safety, I want to be sure I know exactly what the issue is and how (it) could be dealt with (so) I will be requiring the advice of the Attorney General," he said.
