Deputy Paul Murphy says that the acting Environment Minister Alan Kelly is using Irish Water workers as a bargaining chip to maintain the charges.
It comes after Mr Kelly called for a "common-sense debate" on the future of Irish Water.
He said that he would be writing to the leaders of all political parties urging them to meet with staff before making any decision on their future.
However, Anti Austerity TD Paul Murphy (pictured below) said this was cynical and that water charges needed to be abolished as a matter of urgency.
He said: "I think Alan Kelly has very cynically presented himself as some sort of saviour of the workers in Irish Water, when in fact he's nothing of the sort.
"We should get rid of water charges. We should abolish Irish Water and all the workers in Irish Water should then be transferred to a national water authority or to the (local authority) councils where the majority of the work is done in any case in relation to water."
