Partial solar eclipse taking place this morning

The last solar eclipse to be seen in Irish skies for years is taking place this morning.

The last solar eclipse to be seen in Irish skies for years is taking place this morning.

The sun will rise partially obscured by the moon in what is known as a partial solar eclipse.

The sun will look as though a chunk has been bitten out of its left side as it rises.

David Moore, Chairman of Astronomy Ireland, advised those intending to watch it to be very careful.

"Even the half that is left can seriously damage your eyesight," Mr Moore said.

"You should never look at the sun with binoculars or a telescope, and even if you are looking at it with sunglasses… just a quick glance is all you need.

"The best way is to view it with a special dark filter."

Mr Moore said anyone interested in viewing the eclipse in safety will be able to see a selection of photos later this morning on the Astronomy Ireland website at www.astronomy.ie.
