Over half of IFA members intend to cancel membership according to poll

New research shows that over half of all IFA members intend to cancel their membership.

The poll by farming website Agriland was carried out in the wake of the organisation's wage scandal.

There has been major controversy since details emerged last week of former General Secretary Pat Smith's salary and €2m severance package.

The revelations have also led to the resignation of the group's President Eddie Downey.

Former Chief Economist, Con Lucey, is expected to publish a review of the IFA next month - but Editor of Agriland Margaret Donnelly has said it may cause more problems: “There will be elements of that that people will be very unhappy about, whether it is other large salaries in IFA or just where money is being spent or how it is being spent.

“We don’t know what’s going to be in that. After that I think the IFA will be able to put itself on a straighter path, it can look forward to electing a new president and hopefully the members get to have a real say in who is running the IFA and how it is being run in the future.”
