More than 1,500 Irish citizens sought the help of the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2013 representing a 6.5% increase on last year.

More than 1,500 Irish citizens sought the help of the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2013 representing a 6.5% increase on last year.

The largest number of consular cases occurred in Spain, followed by Australia, USA, Britain, Canada and France.

227 of the cases involved Irish people who died abroad in 2013, up from 194 in 2012.

2013 saw a drop in the number of Irish people arrested abroad - down from 287 last year to 255 this year.
