Outdoor Mass for Belfast church campaigners
25/12/2005 - 11:58:43Campaigners for the reopening of a Catholic church in North Belfast have celebrated Christmas Mass on the street.
Up to 150 people attended the service, held outside St Joseph’s Church in Sailortown.
The church had been closed in February 2001 by the Bishop of Down and Connor, because the Catholic Church claimed there was no longer a sustainable local community in the dockland area, but services have continued to take place every Sunday.
Urgent repairs to the building, which is a listed structure, are needed.
