O'Sullivan: Property tax to be set at local level in future

The Minister for Local Government Jan O'Sullivan has said the rate of property tax will initally be set at a national level and local authorities will set the rate in the future.

Yesterday, the Environment Minister Phil Hogan announced that city and county councils will set the rate of property tax as part of a radical overhaul of local government.

It means that different rates may be applied in different parts of the country.

Minister O'Sullivan said the detail still has to be worked out.

Ms O'Sullivan said: "My understanding is that initially it will be set at a national level, but because we are putting these structures in place now, it will mean in the future it can be related to decisions made at local level."
