A new survey shows only 3% of Irish GPs say they will definitely take part in the governments new "free GP" care scheme to those under the age of six, which is due to come into effect in the middle of the year.

A new survey shows only 3% of Irish GPs say they will definitely take part in the governments new "free GP" care scheme to those under the age of six, which is due to come into effect in the middle of the year.

Around 720 GPs were surveyed as part of the research, carried out by the National Association of General Practitioners.

The findings show 41% of those surveyed say they "will definitely or probably not" take on the scheme in its current form.

The NAGP is set to brief the Fine Gael health committee on the findings this evening.
