One in 20 motorists in Ireland has been caught drink driving over the past 10 years, according to figures compiled by the Irish Independent.

One in 20 motorists in Ireland has been caught drink driving over the past 10 years, according to figures compiled by the Irish Independent.

The statistic covering fully-licenced drivers shows an average of 51.5 motorists per 1000 people in the population have been caught, but that figure is far higher in some counties.

According to the paper, the top rate is in Monaghan, while the lowest is in Roscommon.

The second highest rate of detections was found in Cavan, followed by Louth.
