Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to two car crashes in counties Carlow and Mayo, in which one man died and three young people remain criticaly ill.

A 42-year-old man was killed in a single car crash on the Tullow to Castledermot road in Co Carlow shortly before 4pm yesterday.

Three young people - two men in their 20s and a 16-year-old girl - remain in a critical condition in hospital this morning after they were involved in a three-car crash on the Kilkelly to Knock road in Co Mayo yesterday evening.

The drivers of the other two cars were also taken to hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
