Ombudsman seeks overhaul of child-protection services

09/03/2006 - 08:22:50
The Ombudsman for Children is calling for a complete overhaul of Ireland's child-protection services, which she claims are totally inadequate.

Emily Logan says hundreds of child-abuse victims may not be getting the help they need due to major problems with existing protection services.

She said these problems include a lack of information and awareness about the services available, as well as delays in the provision of these services and a lack of adequate support after a child reports abuse.

Ms Logan is due to make a submission on the matter to the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children later this morning.
