O'Kane suspended over Middleton photos

The editor of the Irish Daily Star, Michael O'Kane has been suspended with immediate effect, following the publication of topless photos of Kate Middleton in the newspaper.

In a statement issued by Independent Star Limited, the company says an investigation has now been launched into the circumstances that led to the Irish Daily Star re-publishing pages from the French magazine 'Closer', which contained images of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The newspaper says it will make no further comment until after the completion of this investigation by the company's shareholders.

The news comes as lawyers for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have told a French court this evening that Kate Middleton is a woman, not an object, and called for an injunction banning further printing of topless pictures of her.

A decision will be announced tomorrow morning.

They also want the photographer who took the snaps to face criminal charges.

The controversy has prompted the Justice Minister here to announce that he plans to re-examine our privacy legislation.

Alan Shatter says there will have to be a balanced law that protects freedom of the press but also allows an individual's right to privacy.

The future of the newspaper remains in doubt after one of it's co-owners announced he intended to close it.
