Government criticised for planning of thousands of retirements05/02/2012 - 18:36:50
Opposition parties are criticising the government for not planning adequately for the retirement of nearly 8-thousand public servants at the end of this month.
Opponents of the retirement scheme claim the consequences of the move will not be felt until later in the year.
There's concern that since most of those taking early retirement are of senior and management level, their expertise will be difficult to replace.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said that contingency plans are in place to ensure a smooth transition into a more streamlined public service.
Fianna Fail spokesperson on Justice, Equality and Defence, Dara Calleary, says his party will be watching the process closely:
"public services will suffer because of this governments inability to plan for the amount of retirements and to put contingency plans in place. I'll be interested and I will be watching very closely how the implementation teams of justice and defence are working and we certainly will be holding the government to account for those services".
