90,000 Irish children 'without adequate food or heat'


One of Ireland's leading social campaigners has warned that more than 90,000 children continue to live in consistent poverty in Ireland.

This means they live in dire or chronic poverty without adequate food or heat.

Sr Stan Kennedy told a conference in Kilkenny this morning that a further 200,000 children are at risk of poverty.

She said Ireland has consistently failed to put children's needs first, despite the unimaginable economic prosperity experienced for over a decade during the Celtic Tiger years.

Sr Stan said the current recession means the plight of many children is now worse than ever before.
