RTÉ journalists oppose closure of London bureau

Journalists at RTÉ have strongly opposed the proposed closure of the broadcaster's London office.

The station had announced the move last month as part of a series of cost-cutting measures, which also included a proposed average cut of 30% in the pay of its top 20 earners.

A voluntary redundancy scheme is also to be introduced at RTÉ as part of overall efforts to save up to €25m.

However today it was revealed that the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) chapel has formally adopted a motion opposing the closure of the London office.

“The Chapel rejects RTE's proposal to cut coverage of UK affairs through the closure of its London bureau with the potential loss of five jobs," the NUJ said in a statement.

"We deplore both the proposal itself as well as the manner in which it was communicated both to the staff concerned and the NUJ generally," the statement continued.

"We regard the latter as a serious breach of trust."

The statement said that given the significant historic and continuing links between Ireland and the UK, the announcement was "a betrayal of RTÉ's public service broadcasting remit".

The NUJ said the matter will now be dealt with through established industrial relations procedures, and it was seeking an urgent meeting with RTÉ management to discuss the issue.
