Household charge: Govt to examine existing property databases

Minister of State for Trade and Development Joe Costello has said that the Government will be looking at registers of landlords and second home owners as part of efforts to get everyone signed up to the household charge.
Around half of those liable for the payment had registered by last Saturday's deadline.
Latecomers will incur fines on top of the €100 charge.
Minister Costello today said that part of the problem with the introduction of the charge was the lack of a database to check, but some existing lists will now be cross-referenced to see who is signed up.
"What the Government are going to be doing is… targeting people who are targetable with the database that is there," he said.
"There are over 300,000 people who have paid the Non-Principal Property Registration Tax, and there is about 90,000 landlords.
"They are the people that the Government will be looking at now to see whether or not those people have paid."
