Oireachtas banking inquiry to be set up by next week

The full Oireachtas banking inquiry could be up and running by next week - but it may be months before it begins public hearings.

The government has given its backing for the inquiry to be set up immediately, and hopes to have it established next week.

Labour TD Ciaran Lynch will chair the inquiry - but Enda Kenny is warning that it could be months before everything is in place to allow hearings to begin.

The Taoiseach says there will be strict limits to what the inquiry can deal with.
