Gardaí probing the death of 47-year-old Christy Daly, who was found dead in a drain in Co Offaly yesterday, have upgraded their investigation to a murder enquiry.
A post mortem has been carried out on the body but detecives said the results would not be released for operational reasons.
The Clara man, a father of six who was known to gardaí, was found in a drain yesterday 100m from a burnt caravan and two burnt out cars at Bog Rd, Kilbride in Clara.
He had been released from prison last month.
Superintendent David Taylor from the Garda Press Office said detectives are looking for people who were in the area around December 29.
"We are asking anybody (if they saw) a caravan and two vehicles on fire at this location," Supt Taylor said.
"Both vehicles were extensively damaged and have been taken for a technical examination.
Supt Taylor said there was no indication that the body had been burnt.
"The body was in a drain," he said.
"Quite a deep drain - about 6ft deep.
"As you can imagine we have bog conditions out there and the inclement weather over the past week did not make recovery of the remains easy - but they have been recovered."
An incident room has been set up at Tullamore Garda Station and gardaí can be contacted at 057 9327600, or on the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111 or at any station.
