O'Cuiv against inviting royals to 1916 centenary

A senior Fianna Fail figure said he doesn't believe it would be appropriate to invite a member of the British royal family to the 1916 commemorations.

Eamon O'Cuiv said such a move could be a serious distraction from the significance of the celebrations.

His grandfather, Eamon De Valera, was one of the leaders during the 1916 Easter rising.

Deputy O'Cuiv says he isn't opposed to members of the British royal family coming to Ireland - but not for 1916 centenary events.

"I'm not sure that something that would take away from the centrality of the message … would be a g good idea for the commemoration," he said.

"I'm not convinced that inviting a member of the British royal family to the ceremony for 1916 would be a good idea. And it would open a whole lot of other issues up."
