The National Children's Nurseries Association is calling for improved monitoring of childcare services following revelations about widespread breaches of safety regulations in such facilities.

Reports this morning said inspections in the west of the country found that just 21 of 160 childcare facilities were complying with statutory regulations.

The problems identified include inadequacies in security, sanitary facilities and fire precautions, as well as insufficient heating, a lack of play areas and toxic or hazardous materials left within reach of children.

The National Children's Nurseries Association said today that the findings were unacceptable and that advisors should be appointed to monitor facilities and instruct carers on how to improve the service.
