NTA confirms increase of fare prices

The National Transport Authority has confirmed that fare prices will increase.

The hikes will come into effect from next month after the NTA granted price rises for Bus Éireann, Irish Rail, Dublin Bus and Luas services.

The cost of monthly, annual and tax-saver tickets across these operators will jump from the November 1. While cash tickets, leap card and pre-paid tickets will also jump from December 1.

NTA Chief Executive Gerry Murphy said they had no choice but to approve the price increases.

"There is another 17% reduction in public subsidy that is going to be available for them," he said.

"That reflects our economic crisis and fact that subsidy has been reduced year on year

"They therefore have to look for fares increases

"Now we have moderated fares increases and we have changed them around substantially

"In the end they have to get extra revenue next year to keep the companies running."
