Newtowncashel community unite to hold funeral amid serious flooding

In Co Longford the community of Newtowncashel is being praised for helping to allow a funeral go ahead today - despite serious flooding.

John Clarke died in Christmas morning and today he was brought by tractor and trailer to Saints' Island cemetery.

The access roadway to the graveyard is underwater and local people have spent the past few days making the route safe for the procession.

Local Cllr and undertaker Gerard Farrell outlines how they managed the situation.

"We just transferred the coffin onto a tractor and trailer, 12 of us got up on that trailer, sat on bales of hay and travelled with the coffin into the graveyard and behind us then was another tractor and covered trailer, cattle trailer, with the family and close friends and neighbours - they came after us."
