A weak stream of sunlight has marked the winter solstice at Newgrange in Co Meath.
100 people, most of them who'd won a lottery to be there, were inside the chamber at daybreak, with hundreds more gathered outside.
A beam of sunlight enters the chamber of the ancient tomb at dawn on the shortest day of the year.
It was misty there this morning, but a thread of sunlight entered the chamber at around 9am, marking the winter solstice.
It's the shortest and darkest day of the year, with less than seven and a half hours of daylight.
Pedestrians and cyclists are being urged to be safe and be seen. Drivers are being asked to play their part in protecting vulnerable road users by using dipped headlights.
