New software could cut out €16m welfare fraud

The Government is hoping new software will cut another €16m from Ireland's annual welfare fraud bill.

A test of the programme has already shown it could catch 50% more "non-compliant jobseeker payment recipients" than traditional methods.

The new system was able to detect errors and fraudulent claims in 6.3% of cases investigated, compared to 4.5% through traditional means.

A total of €510m is expected to be saved in the area overall this year.
