The Tánaiste has today confirmed that families will soon be able to get death certificates which do not include the cause of death.
Joan Burton says she will allow a short-form death certificate to exclude the cause of death, in cases such as suicide, or death in violent circumstances.
She says the move will not affect the official records, and that the cause of death will still appear on a long-form certificate.
However, the move has been criticised by one coroner who says it might play down the extent of Ireland's suicide problem.
