New road safety campaign 'Give up your bad driving habits for Lent'

A west of Ireland road safety campaign is asking to motorists to give up their bad habits for Lent.

The Road Safety department in Mayo County Council has said giving up dangerous habits like speeding and tailgating could save lives.

It says one in three crashes are speed related.

And the Council's Road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons has said that is just one of many driving habits that can prove fatal: “They use the mobile phone while they are driving, to make sure they are well rested before they are tired, or if they are tailgating make sure they leave a space between themselves and other road users.

“And also unfortunately from the figures of last year, it is people failing to wear a seat belt.”
