New political group 'Protect Rural Ireland' canvas in Portlaoise

A new political group called Protect Rural Ireland is holding its first canvas today in Portlaoise.

They are hoping to unseat a number of politicians in the next general election.

Today's target is Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Charlie Flanagan.

The group is not putting forward any election candidates itself - just focusing on damaging the chances of any politician who supports the construction of wind farms or pylons.

“They are ineffective in rural Ireland and regardless of damage they are doing to people’s health, division of communities, damage to our landscape and we have been backed into a corner,” Spokesperson Mr Fingleton said.

Mr Fingleton also rejected claims of negative campaigning saying they have been backed into a corner.

“Politicians are not looking at the evidence and they are continuing to build them (wind farms) as if they have no impact.”
