New penalties for texting or emailing while driving

From tomorrow, drivers are reminded that they face tough new penalties if caught texting or emailing while driving.

The new penalties come on top of existing penalties for holding a phone while driving - they also close a loophole which allowed motorists to send a text message if a mobile was held in a cradle within the car.

Drivers will no longer be able to take penalty points for the offence, and will be required to attend court if they're caught texting while driving.

If convicted, motorists face up to a €1000 fine.
