New Cork flood defences 'will take several years'

Cork City Council's Director of Service Jim O'Donovan has said that plans are underway to put proper flood defences in place in the city - but admits it may take several years.

“The Office of Public Works has been carrying out studies on longer-term flood protection measures,” he said.

“I think they’ve indicated that they’ll be in the position to present the options and possible solutions towards June or July.

He cautioned that Cork will not be in a better position by this time next year, however.

“The process and the kind of works that are needed will certainly take several years.”
