New bill to crack down on excessive land rezoning

Environment Minister John Gormley
The Government is reportedly set to introduce new legislation in the new year imposing tighter restrictions on the rezoning of land.
Reports this morning say the bill is designed to end the rezoning of excessive amounts of land for development.
Environment Minister John Gormley has already used his powers to intervene in rezoning decisions made in Mayo, Monaghan and Waterford which conflicted with national planning policies.
The new legislation will reportedly require local councils to show why the land is being rezoned and to provide an outline on provisions for schools, public transport, water supplies and sewerage schemes.
