Almost 20,000 cigarettes, as well as tobacco and alcohol, have been seized at Dublin Port.

Three revenue sniffer dogs were involved in an operation on Saturday which saw the seizures from two Romanian registered buses and an Irish registered van.

The haul came was discovered coming off a ferry from Holyhead, and comprised 19,260 cigarettes, 640 grams of tobacco, and 1,047 litres of alcohol. The cigarettes involved were Kent, Marlboro, Lucky Strike, Winchester and Rothman brands.

The goods would have been worth over €20,344, with a potential loss to the Exchequer of €9,255.

Three of Revenue's detection dogs - name Casey, Meg, and Holly - were involved in the seizure.

In the first six months of the year, 1.7 million cigarettes have been seized, as well as 243kg of tobacco.
