National strategy group calls for one-year maternity leave

An expert group has told the Government it should extend paid maternity leave to a full year as an urgent priority.

The group on the national Early Years Strategy said Ireland's current system of paid maternity leave falls short of the UN's international target of 12 months.

It's also calling for one week of paid paternity leave to be introduced for the fathers of newborn children.

It wants both measures to be implemented within five years.
