The National Planning Conference gets underway in Kilkenny later, with unfinished housing estates and the Mahon Report set to dominate proceedings at the two-day event.

A representative from NAMA will be among the attendees, along with Environment Minister Phil Hogan.

President of the Irish Planning Institute Brendan Allen is hoping Minister Hogan will shed light on the progress that is being made in the area of planning.

"What we hope Phil Hogan will be talking about will be how the Government are going to respond to the various recommendations made in the Mahon Report," said Mr Allen.

"What we would like to hear is how he would propose to deal with the recommendations of a new planning regulator and what the Government's views are in relation to that and how quickly they would see that happening."
