The Road Safety Authority is reminding drivers to heed the basic rules of the road.

The RSA says things like speeding, driving under the influence and using mobile phones continue to be major factors in road accidents.

National 'Beep Beep Day' is being launched today which will educate young children on road safety.

Brian Farrell of the Road Safety Authority says the skills children learn will become lifelong good habits: "To instill basic rules of the road in a fun, creative and interactive way paving the way for life long learning in relation to road safety, because it doesn’t just begin or stop in preschool, this is something they will take to primary school and secondary school and into third level obviously when you are actually going through the learn to drive stage."
