Murder trial for homeless man set on fire in Phoenix Park begins
A 29-year-old man has gone on trial for the murder of a homeless man who was allegedly beaten to death and set on fire in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.
Ciaran Moran with a previous address at Camden Street, denies murdering Gerard Donnelly in November 2013.
The jury has heard that Gerard Donnelly's body was discovered when two gardaí went to investigate a fire in the Phoenix Park in the early hours of November 29, 2013.
The body was ablaze, he had a v-shaped mark on his thumb, and a toe on his left foot had been freshly amputated.
An aerosol and a lump hammer were found at the scene.
Opening the case the proseuction has said there will be evidence Gerard Donnelly died from multiple blows to the head.
The jury heard he was homeless but had €140,000 in an EBS account.
The prosecution claimed that the accused man Ciaran Moran who was also homeless, knew Gerard Donnelly was "an individual of quite considerable means" and that CCTV places him near the scene.
