Murder charge sees inquest into teenager's death adjourned

21/06/2006 - 16:40:41
An inquest into the death of a Dublin teenager was adjourned today after a man was charged with his murder.

Gavin Weldon, 19, from Raheen Park, Ballyfermot, died after receiving a stab wound in an incident near his west Dublin home in July last year.

Requesting the inquest be adjourned, Insp Christopher Mangan said: “A person has been charged in relation to the death of Mr Weldon this morning.”

Earlier, Gary Gleeson, 22, from Lisryan, Granard, Co Longford, made no reply as he was charged in Kilmainham District Court with murder.

He was granted legal aid and remanded in custody to appear before the court again in a week’s time.

Insp Mangan, who asked the Dublin City Coroner to adjourn the inquest under Section 25 (2) of the Coroner’s Act, said: “A file for a book of evidence will be prepared now.”

The Coroner, Dr Brian Farrell, said: “I am aware of the circumstances of his death but I can’t make any comment now.”

He told Mr Weldon’s mother, who was accompanied to the Coroner’s Court by a garda detective, that the inquest would be adjourned until all criminal proceedings had been completed.
