Motorists warned of spot flooding

Motorists are being advised to take care on the roads this morning following heavy overnight rain in many parts.

AA Roadwatch say the worst affected areas are in Carlow where Maryborough St in Graiguecullen is impassable due to flooding.

There is excess surface water on the N7 Dublin/Limerick Rd in both directions at Junction 7.

In Cork, Park Road and Longfield Bridge in Mallow are closed due to flooding, while the Mill Rd in Fermoy is impassable.

Heavy rain and high winds look set to return this evening - however forecasters say conditions won't be as bad as those seen last week.

Siobhan Ryan, meteorologist with Met Éireann, says it is coastal areas that will mainly be affected.

“Certainly later tonight and tomorrow evening [with] those heavy showers today, there’s a chance of spot flooding, but later tonight and first thing tomorrow it will be a countrywide event, some heavy rain,” she said.

“Nonetheless, we aren’t looking at huge totals – we’re looking at somewhere between five and up to 15mm during the morning time, so most places should be able to stand that rain, it’s just the fact that the winds will be onshore, and the pressure will be low along the east and south of the country.
