Around 2,500 homes are still without power this afternoon after lightning strikes this morning caused disruption to the electricity supply.

Around 2,500 homes are still without power this afternoon after lightning strikes this morning caused disruption to the electricity supply.

The south of the country has been affected with the majority of outages in Kilkenny, Clonmel, Bandon and Arklow.

ESB crews are working to repair the lines and it is hoped power will be restored to all areas by 5pm this evening.

Elsewhere, gardai have issued warnings to motorists in some areas about the adverse weather conditions.

Irish Ferries announced the cancellation of all Swift sailings because of adverse weather.

Gardaí in Cork asked motorists to take extra care because of fallen trees on the Cork to Macroom Road and on the Lough Road in Cork city.
