More than 1,000 drivers caught using phone while driving over weekend

Gardaí say almost 1,200 fixed charge notices were issued as part of their blitz on drivers who used their mobiles phones over the past weekend.

The figure comes as officers launch their road safety campaign for the May Bank Holiday.

Gardaí say drivers are four times more likely to have an accident if they are using a mobile phone.

Assistant Garda Commissioner John Twomey says some elements of the public are not getting the message.
